DICOM is a frequently used term that many people don’t understand. DICOM is digital imaging and communication in medicine. As the name suggests, the medical field has adopted an imaging standard that allows digital images to be acquired and stored in a standard format that allows those images to be read by different imaging systems sold by different vendors. The ability to take an x-ray in one system and view it in another, frequently competitive, system is often referred to as interoperability.
The dental industry does not currently have a DICOM standard. Images are typically acquired and stored in each vendor’s proprietary software, and exchanging digital images can be a cumbersome process. The ADA does have a committee to study DICOM in dentistry, and a recommendation on the DICOM standard will be made in the future. As the leader in integrated technologies, Patterson Dental has released Patterson DICOM Imaging for Patterson EagleSoft . The Patterson DICOM Imaging module gives Patterson EagleSoft customers the ability to send and receive images in the DICOM standard format.
